Modern Languages is a thriving area in the University. The Department runs a specialist degree course for linguists - the BA (Hons) Modern Languages - which includes named routes in literature, in linguistics and Area Studies - and also contributes to programmes throughout the institution. More than 2,000 students currently attend courses in six languages: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and English as a Foreign Languages, together with an increasing number of exchange students from other countries in Europe and beyond.
Our priority is the development of communicative skills. This is ensured by the work of the full-time staff (which includes a number of native speakers of the languages taught) together with lectors and assistants. A purpose-built language centre complete with the latest multi-media technology, satellite/video viewing rooms and computer laboratories, which are available all day for private use, form part of our facilities.
Degree programmes administered by other departments which involve language study to honours level and incorporate a year's residence abroad include:
along with several other degree routes within the economics degree programme. Students following Business in Europe, Accounting and Finance and the international economics courses are eligible for the award of a license, Diplom or Maîtrise (as appropriate) as well as BA(Hons). In addition, two languages can be studied with European studies, geography, economics or a range of science subjects on the BSc (Hons) Combined Studies (Minor Principal Languages).
